About the event

A two day course set in picturesque Garway Hill, west Herefordshire, aimed at beginners, led by award-winning professional sculptor Jan Bruce.

A maximum of 4 carvers per course ensures plenty of attention and guidance to help get you started.

Day one will cover tools, techniques and stone characteristics, followed by mapping-out of the design onto the stone, and starting to rough-out your sculpture. You are encouraged to bring your own ideas, sketches and even models of what you’d like to carve, but if you’re not sure where to start, a selection of ideas can be provided for you. The stone you’ll be using is soft enough to ensure you can make lots of rewarding progress over the 2 days.

On day two, you’ll continue to carve and get used to the different types of chisel and when to use them. You’ll start to get a real feeling for stonecarving. You may finish your piece in the 2 days, but if not, you’ll be advised how to continue beyond the course by getting hold of your own tools. Further guidance can be discussed if required.

Courses take place in a sheltered, undercover location on a working farm. The space will not be heated, so please dress appropriately for the season. Aprons, eye protection and dust masks will be provided, but I would recommend protective footwear if possible.
