'Hugs in the Garden'
at The Laskett
2nd ~ 31st October 2025, Tues ~ Thurs, 10:30 ~ 17:00
"This outdoor exhibition presents seven stone sculptures by award-winning Herefordshire artist Jan Bruce, displayed throughout the Laskett Gardens. Three of the works were first shown here during Herefordshire Art Week, now joined by four others recently returned from national sculpture parks where they were exhibited over the summer.
Set within The Laskett’s celebrated gardens of rooms, vistas and follies, the sculptures form a collection exploring themes of connection, embrace and presence. Each sculpture is carved in Portland jurassic limestone using traditional hand tools, with an emphasis on simplicity of form and the timeless qualities of the material."
Visitors can also enjoy work by The Laskett’s artist-in-residence, Clair Hodgson @clair_hodgson, whose wide-ranging paintings and drawings are shown in the indoor gallery space. Clair is often to be found painting in the gardens themselves, capturing their atmosphere in the changing light and seasons.
After exploring the gardens and exhibitions, visitors can relax with tea and delicious cakes in the café, and a browse of the delighttful gift shop.
About The Laskett Gardens
"Set in the Herefordshire countryside, The Laskett Gardens are among the most distinctive formal gardens created in Britain since the Second World War. Designed and developed over many years by Sir Roy Strong CH and his late wife Julia Trevelyan Oman, the gardens form a remarkable sequence of rooms, avenues, vistas and follies that reflect their shared love of art, history and theatre.
Today, The Laskett is owned and cared for by Perennial, the UK charity that supports everyone working in horticulture. Through Perennial’s stewardship, the gardens continue to evolve while remaining open to the public, offering inspiration to garden and art lovers alike.
Perennial’s work ensures that those who nurture Britain’s landscapes — from gardeners and growers to groundskeepers and tree surgeons — have access to vital support and advice when they need it most. Exhibitions and artist residencies at The Laskett form part of Perennial’s mission to celebrate creativity, craftsmanship and the connection between people and the natural world."
'Hugs in the Garden'
"Jan Bruce’s exhibition 'Hugs in the Garden' sits comfortably within The Laskett’s setting — a place shaped by artistic vision, structure and human care. His hand-carved stone figures, placed among the garden’s formal spaces and shifting foliage, echo the themes of connection and presence that run through both the landscape and Perennial’s mission.
Each sculpture invites moments of stillness and reflection, encouraging visitors to pause within the garden’s changing light and rhythm. In a space created to celebrate creativity and nurture wellbeing, 'Hugs in the Garden' extends those ideas in stone — quiet gestures of warmth, carved for a living garden."
